英語グローバル学科の元田舞生さんが「城西大学 英語スピーチコンテスト」で鶴ヶ島市長賞を受賞しました。

　「第12回 城西大学 英語スピーチコンテスト」(主催：城西大学語学教育センター、後援：埼玉県、毎日新聞社、埼玉新聞社、テレビ埼玉ほか)の本選大会が11月23日午後、オンライン上で開催され、本学文学部英語グローバル学科3年生の元田舞生さんが鶴ヶ島市長賞を受賞しました。

 

　元田さんは「Believe in Japanese Ambiguity (日本人の曖昧性を武器に)」の演題で、6分間の英語弁論を披露。スピーチでは、「明確な意思表示を避けようとする日本人のコミュニケーションスタイルは時に非難を受けるが、主張を曖昧にすることで多様な意見が述べやすくなることもある。曖昧性には、和を重んじる日本人らしさがあることを再認識してほしい」と呼びかけました。受賞を受けて元田さんは、「本選に向けた練習を通じて自分自身の成長を実感でき、自信につながりました。指導教授をはじめゼミの卒業生や先輩、同期の仲間の励ましに感謝しています」と話しました。

　指導を担当した英語グローバル学科 グローバル・コミュニケーション専攻の清水利宏教授(英語スピーチ・プレゼンテーション研究室)は、「オンライン形式のコンテストでは、限られた視聴覚環境を最大限に活用する工夫が必要です。元田さんは豊かな表現力でオンライン発表の難しさを克服していました」と話しました。

 

　今回の受賞により英語グローバル学科は、各地の英語弁論大会において、本年度だけで３度目の入賞を果たしています。

 

Mau Motoda from the Department of English and Global Studies won the Tsurugashima Mayor's Award at the Josai International University English Speech Contest.

The 12th English Speech Contest (organized by the Josai International University Language Education Centre and supported by Saitama Prefecture, The Mainichi Newspapers, The Saitama Newspapers, TV Saitama and others) was held online on the afternoon of November 23, and Mau Motoda, a third-year student in the Department of English Global Studies in the Faculty of Letters at the University, was awarded the Tsurugashima Mayor's Prize.

 　Ms Motoda presented a six-minute English speech entitled 'Believe in Japanese Ambiguity'. In her speech, she said: 'The Japanese communication style of avoiding clear statements of intention is sometimes criticized, but ambiguity in assertions can make it easier to express diverse opinions. I would like people to reaffirm that ambiguity is rooted in Japanese tradition that protects harmony". On receiving the award, Ms Motoda said: 'Through practicing for the competition, I was able to realize my own personal growth, which gave me confidence. I am grateful for the encouragement of my supervisor, seminar graduates, seniors and fellow classmates".

　Professor Toshihiro Shimizu (English Speech and Presentation Laboratory) of the Department of English and Global Studies' Global Communication Major, who was in charge of the guidance, said: 'In an online contest, it is vital to devise ways to make the most of the limited audio-visual environment. Ms Motoda overcame the difficulties of online presentations with her rich expressive skills".

　This award marks the third time this year alone that the Department of English and Global Studies has won prizes at English speech contests in various regions.
